Programs
Sewer Science
Sewer Science is an award-winning, hands-on lab program for high school students that teaches the science of water treatment. Through a week-long interactive experience, students simulate wastewater, clean it using physical, chemical, and biological processes, and test its quality. This program links science and technology to real-world environmental issues, making it a favorite among both students and teachers.
In partnership with the Youth Science Center (YSC), we bring Sewer Science to around 5,000 students in 50 schools each year. We provide everything needed for the program, including specialized equipment, workbooks, and in-class instruction. Each fall, we also offer workshops where teachers can learn more about the program and sign up to participate.
Think Earth
Think Earth is a free, award-winning curriculum for students from pre-K through 8th grade. The program includes grade-specific kits with engaging lessons, colorful posters, and a video, all aligned with California Content Standards. Students learn the importance of a clean environment and practical ways to conserve resources, reduce waste, and minimize pollution. The program also offers environmental surveys for homes and schools to help families and students understand and reduce their environmental impact.
Think Watershed
CWWEF proudly partners with Think Watershed, a program that educates students in grades 4 through 6 about the region's watershed and its impact on the marine environment. Through hands-on activities and a floating lab boat trip, students learn how human behavior affects air, water, and habitat quality, becoming stewards of the environment.
Grades of Green
Grades of Green, a long-time collaborator and partner, is an environmental non-profit that empowers youth to care for the planet. Their free RISE Climate Solutions Campaign is a school-year long competition where students work in teams to create impactful environmental change in their schools and communities. Additionally, their LAUNCH Eco-Lessons provide step-by-step, NGSS aligned environmental action lessons that can be utilized by K-12 teachers and students. Both programs provide educators the opportunity to receive a stipend and for student teams to win Eco-Grants up to $1,000.
School Bus Tours Program
Discover what happens to your sewage and trash after it leaves your home with our School Bus Tours Program. In partnership with LACSD, CWWEF offers free tours of solid waste and wastewater processing facilities, providing students and teachers with a unique, behind-the-scenes look at waste management in action.
To qualify for the program, teachers must serve grades 5-12 at a school located within LACSD's service area, which includes most of Los Angeles County.
5th Grade Water Education Program
In partnership with the Youth Science Center, CWWEF offers hands-on water education activities for 5th graders, combining classroom instruction with interactive learning.
